We have a team of experts who have extensive knowledge and experience with understanding sexual violence, criminal justice and police powers.

  • Dr. Ed Johnston - Co-Director (he/him)

    Dr Ed Johnston is an academic lawyer with over a decade’s experience teaching at University, where he holds the postition of Senior Lecturer. Having obtained his PhD in the field of criminal procedure, Ed teaches and researches in the areas surrounding criminal procedure, justice and sexual offences. Ed is passionate about social justice and trying to instigate change from within. Ed is widely published and speaks at home and abroad on a wide array of topics.

  • Sophie Marsh - Co-Director (she/her)

    Sophie Marsh is a Lecturer in Law and Criminology and a Law PhD candidate. The aim of this thesis is to critically examine the role, function and impact of the police interview with adult female victims of rape in the context of the regulatory and 'best practice' guidance in England and Wales. Sophie’s research interests include sexual offences, criminal procedure, criminal law and human rights, in particular, issues surrounding consent and sexual harassment.

  • James McKenna - Lead Consultant (he/him)

    James is a serving Police Inspector in the South West. With over 20 years service, James currently manages a city centre response team of 3 sergeants and 25 police officers. They are the first responders to a host of incidents which include critical incidents, public disorder, assaults and homicides and broad range of Sexual offences. He is passionate about tackling problems and unhealthy cultures head on, and sees education as a key factor in addressing the balance and making a difference.

  • Alex Hathway - Consultant (he/him)

    Alex is an Associate Lecturer in Law and PhD researcher at UWE. His postgraduate research focuses on the emerging forms gambling within video games, touching on aspects of problematic gaming and how to tackle these issues effectively. During his undergraduate law degree, Alex took particular interest in Criminal Law, looking into issues surrounding sexual violence, human rights, criminal procedure, and organised crime.

  • Heather Bennett - Consultant (she/her)

    Heather is a recent law graduate with a strong academic interest in criminal justice, sexual offending, social justice and feminist legal theory. Her dissertation project was an exploration of a decreasing prosecution rate for rape and the use of education - both inside and outside of the criminal justice system - as a mechanism for positive reform. Heather is continuing into postgraduate research where her focus will be on the effectiveness of education in preventing rape and other serious sexual offending.
